Colorado Authorities Determine Suzanne Morphew’s Death as Homicide

After years of mystery surrounding the disappearance of Suzanne Morphew, Colorado authorities have finally unveiled the cause of her death. Morphew, who vanished during a bike ride on Mother’s Day four years ago, had her remains discovered in September 2023, igniting a series of legal battles and controversies.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) autopsy report, obtained by US outlets on Monday, confirmed that Morphew’s death was ruled a homicide. According to the CBI, her demise was attributed to “Homicide by undetermined means in the setting of butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine intoxication.”

CBI Director Chris Schaefer emphasized the ongoing pursuit of justice, stating, “The investigative team assembled to work this case continues to follow the evidence and only the evidence as we seek justice for Suzanne’s death.”

Butorphanol, described by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a synthetic opioid, along with azaperone and medetomidine, were indicated in Morphew’s toxicology report. Interestingly, this combination is noted by the NIH as an effective immobilization protocol for bears.

Morphew’s disappearance on May 10, 2020, sparked a widespread investigation, marked by numerous searches and interviews across multiple states. However, her fate remained elusive until her remains were found in Saguache County, approximately 40 miles from where she was last seen.

The discovery came amid legal drama involving Morphew’s husband, Barry Morphew, who had initially been charged with murder but had the charges dropped in April 2022. The dropped charges followed revelations of withheld evidence that could have impacted his case. Barry Morphew subsequently filed a $15 million lawsuit against county officials, alleging constitutional violations.

In the wake of the grim discovery, Barry Morphew and his daughters are reported to be grieving, according to a statement from his attorney. As the investigation continues, the quest for justice in Suzanne Morphew’s death persists, leaving a community grappling with unanswered questions and unresolved emotions.
