NATO chief chides members “slow arms deliveries have helped Russia”

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg expressed concerns on Monday regarding the delayed delivery of promised military aid to Ukraine, stating that these delays have allowed Russia to gain an upper hand while Ukrainian forces await supplies from the U.S. and Europe. Stoltenberg made these remarks during a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.

“The serious delays in support have led to serious consequences on the battlefield for Ukraine,” Stoltenberg emphasized.

Facing a superior adversary, Ukrainian troops have struggled to defend against Russian advances, including a recent tactical retreat from three villages in the east. Stoltenberg highlighted how the lack of essential resources has enabled Russia to make further progress, stating, “The lack of ammunition has allowed the Russians to push forward along the front line. Lack of air defense has made it possible for more Russian missiles to hit their targets, and the lack of deep strike capabilities has made it possible for the Russians to concentrate more forces.”

Despite promises of unwavering support from Western allies, political disagreements delayed vital U.S. military assistance for six months, and Europe’s military production has failed to keep pace with demand. While Ukraine’s own production of heavy weapons is ramping up, the urgent need for new military aid to counter Russia’s advances remains.

President Zelenskyy acknowledged the slow arrival of Western supplies and urged for expedited assistance. He stressed the critical importance of accelerating this process to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

Meanwhile, Russian aggression continues, with ongoing missile strikes on Ukrainian cities. Tragically, a recent strike in the southern port city of Odesa resulted in multiple casualties and extensive damage to residential areas.

As the conflict persists, analysts suggest that the battlefield remains primarily characterized by artillery exchanges. While significant shifts in the front lines may not occur immediately, ongoing developments favor Russia’s military advantage.

However, NATO and the U.S. remain committed to providing additional support to Ukraine, including Patriot missile systems to counter Russian bombardments. Despite the challenges, Ukrainian officials warn of the looming threat of a major summer offensive by Russian forces.

The strategic importance of towns like Chasiv Yar underscores the broader objectives of the conflict, particularly in the Donetsk region, which has been a focal point of separatist fighting since 2014.
